Will the Money Behind the “Minor” Candidates Stay Minor?

Within the last 24 hours, the Barr campaign has raised over $20,000 online. While a donation bump is expected after the nomination, $20,000 in a day is a strong showing for a minor candidate. However, that amount will need to build in order to run a competitive campaign. Bob Barr’s online tracker shows over $155,000 raised to date.

After launching a new Web site, Chuck Baldwin raised roughly $3,000 within the past 24 hours. Baldwin’s online tracker shows over $37,000 raised to date.

Ralph Nader is in the overall lead among the “little guys” having raised over $460,000 (as of the April FEC filing) since his February 24th announcement on Meet the Press.

Cynthia McKinney’s “Power to the People Committee” has raised over $90,000 as of her April FEC report (note that her campaign is not properly filing the cycle-to-date column and the amount is the total of her three filings).

Newsflash for the retard caucus: YES.

  2. Shane Savoie Says:

After seeing Ron Paul’s Moneybombs blow up last winter, I have more hope than in previous campaigns that we may be able to raise enough money to be taken seriously.

I just hope that, when the MSM starts to cover our cause, they don’t interview disinter (dysentery?). Disinter, anyone informed by you is truly retard caucus material. Go write-in Christine Smith, ya flake!

Umm, Ron Paul ran on a MUCH more radical platform… not mention he actually has support.

Barf money bombs will be a huge failure. Although I might take a huge shit in a box and send it to him if he has one.

They do all day long, everyday. Statists are all over the media.

If the LP isn’t united, the chances of Barr remaining minor go up, maybe significantly. By itself, the LP membership isn’t big enough to finance a competitive campaign. But if it feels motivated, it can provide enough seed money to reach a much larger audience.

If Barr doesn’t take at least a moderate libertarian position on the issues, he risks alienating enough of the membership that he won’t reach critical mass. I voted for him at the convention and contributed $2300. Whether I send another $2300 (he’s still eligible for both “primary” and “election” contributions) will depend on his performance in speeches and interviews.

It wouldn’t matter if he raised $100MM, he still wouldn’t go anywhere. You have a fatally flawed understanding of how the system works if you think otherwise.

  8. Harold S Says:

Next time send the 2300 dollars my way. No Barr in 2008.

is Nader already in the process of a ballot drive as an Independent candidate?

  10. Laine Says:

Nader is in the process of his ballot drive and has filed enough signatures in New Mexico and Hawaii. Other states in the process include Illinois,PA, California and I have started here in Alaska for petitioning.

  11. Jonathan Says:

Disinter says we are all stupid we don’t understand nothing, you should run for President, oh but please finish highschool first.

  12. Jonathan Says:

Nader is well into the process, you can see where they stand at www.votenader.org, a nice website. He won’t be on as many as the Libertarians obviously but he is doing a nice job with the resources he has which is not much. His fight is much harder being Independent. Nader made a bad mistake not seeking the Greens

YOU are trying to tell them the truth and they give you greif. Can’t blame the hardcore, folkes. Barr is surposed to get all this free media according to a lot of you. So you and all the Republican conservatives can put in the big bucks.

BTW, how’s the coverage going on this Wed. Is the big three nightly news covering him? How bout MSNBC, CNN or FOX each hour with B.O. & McLame? It’s nice to have a LP candidate getting total coverage everyday ! Isn’t it?

By the way I would like to mention that according to Opensecrets the FEC watch site Ralph Nader has raised $673,898 not the $400,000 or so figure posted here.

With Wayne running as VP, will that attract a little media attention?

  24. Old Whig Says:

For goodness sake. Stop whining already. The convention’s over, Barr won. If you don’t like it, support another candidate, like Baldwin, or write in Ruwart. That would be the honorable thing to do. All this belly-aching is a waste. Do something positive.

    O.W.

    Vote Baldwin/Castle

  25. Yangus Says:

Barr is such a joke. He only gathered 17 thousand in one day? The Ron Paul campaign averaged 150K a day. This Barr cat is going no where fast. I bet he will end up with less votes than Paul received. I doubt he will ever break the 37 million mark or break one percent in the general election. The Libertarians sold out their principle for some goof ball that will not get more votes than the previous candidates.
