Lieberman Calls for Debate

From the Norwalk Advocate...

Sen. Joe Lieberman called on the four other candidates in the hotly contested U.S. Senate race Thursday to meet next week and agree to a debate schedule.

Lieberman, who lost the Democratic primary to businessman Ned Lamont and is now running as an independent, sent letters to Lamont, Republican Alan Schlesinger, Green Party candidate Ralph Ferrucci and Concerned Citizens candidate Timothy Knibbs.

“Voters are eager to know what we will do to solve the problems affecting their daily lives,” Lieberman wrote in his letter. He also said the candidates have an opportunity to set “a high standard for a new politics of civil engagement.”

Most of the other candidates have already said they’re willing to debate.

On Wednesday, Liz Dupont-Diehl, Lamont’s campaign spokeswoman, said Lamont has already been accepting debate invitations.

“We’ll be responding that we’d be happy to have a debate with the major parties, and we’ll fight for all of the minor parties to be included as well,” she said.

Lamont said he is open to debating.

“I would imagine we’re going to have some debates,” he said Wednesday. “I would think there’d be more than two of us there; there’s a Republican candidate, anyway.”

Lieberman said he’d like the candidates to reach an agreement on the number of debates, the timing, location and format.

I’ve said this before, but I’ll say it again: I don’t agree with Mr. Lieberman on hardly anything, but I thoroughly respect him. I’m glad he lost to the anti-war Ned Lamont, but I am also glad that he’s continuing his campaign as an indepdenent.

This is the first evidence of the dividends his independent campaign is paying.

Lieberman wants all 5 candidates at the debates. How else could he frame his requests? Lamont probably wants the others there primarily because it will lessen Lieberman’s mic time, and from what I know about Lamont, he would be slaugthered by Lieberman in a 1-on-1. In fact, Lieberman might convince ME that the war is peachy keen if he were up against that empty suit, Lamont.

Regardless… This is a good thing.

They should ignore him the way all other “3rd aprty” candidates get treated. Might wake him up…maybe???
