Badnarik News Bits…

Michael Badnarik has updated his campaign blog with tales of his trip to the Nevada and California LP conventions.

First from his Vegas trip comes this excerpt:

And just when it sounds like things couldn’t get any better, Joe Silvestri and I were invited to dinner with a group of liberal non-libertarians. Joe and I found ourselves in a target-rich environment, and we each presented the Libertarian platform to half of the table. My biggest success began as a discussion of financing hearing aids for the elderly. It was suggested that society is obligated to purchase these expensive devices for people who can’t afford them because “they improve their quality of life”. I pretended that I needed a heart transplant, and that I wanted the one currently in use across the table from me because it would improve the quality of MY life. I hammered relentlessly using similar hypothetical examples until my new friend surrendered with an exasperated, “OK! YOU WIN! YOU WIN!”. I had similar success with a Second Amendment discussion that followed. At the end of our three-hour dinner evening, Joe and I compared notes and agreed that we had earned our Libertarian stripes! Although we didn’t have anyone join the LP before leaving the table, we are confident they will all be wrestling with these ideas until they convince themselves that our positions are a legitimate alternative to the welfare/warfare administrations we’ve had to endure for the last several decades.

It is now Wednesday morning and Allen Hacker has just landed in Vegas. He will rent a car, pick me up, and then we’re off to sunny California to continue…

In all honesty their approach of converting people by beating them over the head until they “surrender in exasperation” sounds kind of annoying to me. But moving on from the Nevada LP convention to the California LP convention…

By Saturday morning the ship was already docked in Ensenada, Mexico, and most of the delegates spent their day shopping and sightseeing ashore. I, on the other hand, earned a dubious “Masochist of the Year” award for being dressed in my suit and tie at 7:00am to attend a Libertarian meeting that I was not allowed to participate in. My only defense is to remind you that “The price of Liberty is eternal vigilance”. I spent the day as a spectator of the Bylaws Committee, Platform Committee, and Program Committee meetings. The Platform Committee recommended resolutions related to opposing driver’s license requirements, adding a phrase from the Sixth Amendment to the Judicial platform, and recommending one of three anti-war resolutions that would eventually consume a significant portion of Sunday’s general session.

Since no one at the California or Nevada state conventions can vote in Texas’ Congressional District 10, one would have to think that Badnarik is probably laying the groundwork for another Presidential campaign in 2008.

I think he is taking advantage of his name recognition in order to get campaign contributions.

yeah I agree with that. I am not a libertarian and if I had been at the table my opinion of the lp would have went down

The first bit reminds me of Christian evangelism.

Yuck. A resolution against drivers licenses??????

That’s about the last goddamn thing the LP needs. What is the fascination with appearing fringe to non-libertarians in the LP? Can anyone explain to me why the party loves to slit it’s own throat?

Whoever is on that California platform committee : listen up. THAT’S A POLITICALLY STUPID THING TO HAVE IN YOUR PLATFORM. GET RID OF IT, AND START REFLECTING POLITICALLY POSITIVE AGENDAS YOUR CANDIDATES DONT HAVE TO APOLOGIZE FOR OR DEFEND AGAINST BECUASE THEY ARE LOOPY TO 98 OUT OF 100 people that read it.

    Over and out. :D
