Today’s Candidate: Art Olivier

Today’s candidate of the day is Art Olivier for California Governor.

Olivier is the former mayor of Bellflower, California and the Libertarian candidate for governor this year. In 2000, Olivier was the LP’s Vice-Presidential nominee and Harry Browne’s running mate.

It’s not clear if Olivier has much valuable name recognition as he did not seem to aid the Browne campaign in California. In fact, Browne’s vote totals in the state, as well as in Olivier’s home county (Los Angeles), fell substantially between 1996 and 2000. Then again, people rarely pay attention to Vice-Presidential candidates when they head into the voting booth.

Interestingly, this race now contains three former VP candidates.

I lived 15 minutes away from Bellflower for the first 17 years of my life. I can tell you I never heard of Olivier while living there until I was briefly involved with the LP starting around 2000. Even then, I doubt I would have ever known Bellflower had a Libertarian mayor (especially since local races in California are non-partisan) had it not been for the LP’s internal candidate publicity, and there was very little then or now to indicate any trace of Libertarian influence in the town.

This guy was an absolute joke when he worked at Boeing/McDonnell Douglas. As far as being an Engineer, it should be pointed out that he was responsible for facilities as opposed to being a Professional Engineer.

On a personal level, I found him to be abrasive and condescending to others. I doubt that he would have anything to offer in this position.
