“Grandpa” Al Lewis (1910-2006)

Actor, restaurant owner, radio host, and Green Party candidate Al Lewis died yesterday at the age of 95. Best known as “Grandpa” on the television program The Munsters, Lewis was the 1998 Green Party nominee for governor of New York state.

Though Lewis did not win his race, or even come close, he was successful in one respect. His total of 52,533 votes (1.11%) exceeded the threshold of 50,000 votes set by New York law, thus earning the Green Party an automatic ballot line for the next four years.

Lewis is survived by his wife, Karen Ingenthron-Lewis, three sons and four grandchildren.
