OVILLA, TEXAS - Joey Dauben announced Tuesday that he will seek the U.S. Congressional seat held by Rep. Joe Barton, R-Ennis.

Dauben, 24, will turn 25 in February, before the November general election as required by state and federal election law.

The freelance investigative reporter and financial/political consultant is no stranger to dealing with Barton: as a reporter for The Ellis County Press, Dauben exposed the Ennis Republican’s voting record numerous times, which ultimately was the reason for jumping into the race.

“I figure since I was 3-years-old when Barton was first elected, there needs to be a term limit on career politicians who openly and blatantly violate their U.S. Constitutional oaths of office,” said Dauben, referring to such legislation Barton voted for as the USA PATRIOT Act, the Iraq authorization and a host of massive spending bills. “Joe Barton has treated his constituents with very little respect, much like the people in Midlothian who have to inhale the toxic waste from his biggest political contributors. When the American people send a representative to Washington, we expect them to make due on their oath to uphold and defend the U.S. Constitution.

“Unfortunately, Barton has swayed away from the Constitution time and time again.”

Specifically, Dauben, a Midlothian High School graduate, cited the authorization of force in Iraq and Afghanistan as a “blatant” violation of the Constitution.

“Only the Congress can declare war,” Dauben said. “Barton and others follow the United Nations Security Council more than they do the Constitutional stipulations. Barton helped give the executive branch carte blanche power to wage whatever war they [Bush Administration] wanted, and to me, that’s not only illegal, but immoral. This campaign will focus on making Barton defend his record. Like reporting, I am going to expose his votes on the Constitution-shredding PATRIOT Act, the massive Department of Homeland Security bill, the Westar Energy controversy and let the voters see how much money Midlothian’s cement industry bribes him with.”

Historically, the Libertarians have not gained much of a foothold in Congressional elections.

Dauben has previously run for Midlothian school board three times, even scoring an impressive 29-percent (297 votes) showing as a 22-year-old in a four-way race in 2003. He lost by 19 votes.

But with being from Barton’s home county, Dauben said the stereotypical third-party congressional run would change.

“A lot of the times, third-party candidates just put their name on the ballot, but since Barton is from my ‘back yard’ so to speak, I’ve got a big incentive to run a bona-fide campaign. I want to be a wake-up call for our republican form of government that we’re losing because of politicians like Barton,” said Dauben, who noted that the campaign would fight on a variety of fronts. “The 1, 2 percent totals you see Libertarians get in elections will change. There’s never been a more exciting time than right now to go after these spend-and-spend Republicans, and show voters that the main difference between a Republican and a Democrat is that the Republican will just lie to you about wanting to steal your money, or they will lie to you about what they’re doing in Washington.

“Overall, it will be a pretty exciting experience to say the least.”
