Libertarians Die in Plane Crash

Some very sad news to report on a plane crash in Pennsylvania:

James Conk couldn’t find gas at the airport in Jamestown, N.Y., so he told his father he would head to the nearest airport in Erie, Pa., and give him a ring on the cell phone when he got there. James Conk’s wife, sister and brother-in-law also were aboard the single-engine Cherokee.

But the call never came.

The plane was trying to land in Erie when it crashed about a half-mile from the end of the runway about 9:45 p.m. Saturday, flipping over and trapping the victims, authorities said.

James Conk, 52, his wife, Susan Conk, 44, and Dale Lewis, 49, died instantly of massive trauma, said Erie County Coroner Lyell Cook.

Terri Lewis, who is Dale’s wife and James’ sister, survived. She was in critical condition Sunday at Hamot Medical Center in Erie, hospital officials said.

The family was close and both couples joined the Libertarian Party after James became interested in the party’s political views years ago. James Conk, who also persuaded his father to join, served as chairman of the Kent County Libertarian Party.
